My sister and I were lucky enough to meet Piper on our first day of the Camino in France. I was in a bit of a situation: I had stepped off the path to pee when I sat on a very spiky plant (apologies for the TMI). While my sister and I brainstormed solutions to my problem… a very bright and chipper Piper came around the bend just in time. Let's just say: she knew what to do (and how to laugh).
This was just the first of many times we relied on Piper’s knowledge and experience. An experienced Camino-hiker herself, she knew what to expect in terms of the route, logistics and the weather. She is a competent and confident nature lover, a fluent Spanish speaker, but most of all, her positivity and joy radiates 360 degrees around her. If we could have had her knowledge and advice before we got there… we would have been much better prepared!
Our trip with Piper was nothing short of amazing. She was always brimming with energy and encouragement, making even the longest stretches feel shorter with her laughter, engaging conversations, and thought-provoking questions. Beyond being great company, Piper was incredibly helpful, sharing tips and tricks that made the Camino much easier. She even taught us a clever towel trick to ensure our clothes dried overnight, and thanks to her experience walking the routes, we never got lost and were able to take the most scenic paths.
When I sprained my leg on the stairs, Piper’s CrossFit training came to the rescue—she actually piggybacked me uphill to breakfast! Meeting someone like Piper on the Camino was truly a blessing.
Piper is a huge gift in my life. She came passing by us with a big smile while we were walking along the way on the Camino. We were fortunate enough that our paths passed enough times that we became friends. Her friendship is an incredible blessing and you will understand if you have the opportunity to meet her. We were grateful for her wisdom and advice as we were walking from her previous experiences.
We would have taken the wrong path a couple times, she knew the areas that were rainy and cold, what foods to eat in certain towns, had tiny tips with communicating with albergues and restaurants. The most brilliant help she gave was to use gel and hydration packets on longer days! Genius! If you have the opportunity to walk the Camino with Piper you are one very lucky person. My Camino wouldn’t have been as amazing without getting to walk it with her. Watch out though, church bells always seem to ring when Piper is around (inside joke).
Piper has an infectious energy that brightens every day. She’s always there with a kind word or encouraging advice when things get tough, and her positive attitude is truly contagious. That’s just one part of what makes her so special! She’s also an amazing conversationalist and a great listener. Whether we’re chatting about travel, life, or anything in between, her knowledge and insights make the conversation fly by, and it feels like the miles between us just melt away.
Piper has also proven to be a thoughtful friend. When our bus out of Santiago was leaving late in the evening, she generously offered to store our backpacks at her hotel so we didn’t have to lug them around all day.
And if you ever need a boost on a long trek, don’t forget to ask Piper for her upbeat playlist—it literally saved us! On one particularly grueling 30km day, we were all worn out and dragging our feet, but when Piper played her music, the energy in the group shifted. Suddenly, we were almost sprinting, singing along, and laughing our way to the albergue. We all need a Piper in our lives.
